How

art
acquired?
"But really we're here first and foremost for the students. And so knowing that there's art on the wall that could really all of a sudden change someone's life; make someone think about something in a new way. That's just very exciting."
Genevieve Ellerbee, Associate Registrar
Art Acquisitions at Sheldon
Most art in the collection at Sheldon was acquired in one of two ways - art auctions or donations from private collections. Mainly, the museum purchases their art from three auctions: Christies, Philips and Sotherby. Many pieces of art in the collection are gifts from private collectors or artists. This doesn't mean that all gifts can be accepted, however - limited storage space means high standards for Sheldon. The museum relies on very strict procedures for their purchasing strategies; art pieces must fit the theme of the museum, be professional and in good condition.

"Know that it's always a resource that they can go to, we are free, so you can really come here every day and find something."
"I want them to think that it's a place they can go and take a break, relax, meditate. "
Christian Wurst, Assistant Curator of Exhibitions
